Spanish I will be implementing a new method called OWL (Organic World Language), which will provide students with a %100 immersion experience! This method promotes kinesthetic, interactive learning in which the students help to generate the topics. OWL will be conducted primarily in a circle with students standing, moving and interfacing with everyone in the class. Students will need to be very active participants in this process and will be responsible for creating a safe and respectful environment conducive to learning: in a sense, students are contributing members to the community as a whole. Students will be required to use only Spanish with this method.
It is normal for students to feel frustrated and lost at the beginning. They need to trust the process and be open to making mistakes (or, there is not such thing as a mistake, only making) as they take this exciting journey towards acquiring a second language—the rewards are worth it! Students (contributing community members) are celebrated for taking risks, experiencing vulnerability, and especially asking for help. During the week of September 8-12 (English week), we will interrupt our immersion experience to discuss strategies, challenges and benefits of being in an immersion program.
Principiante – Español 1-2:
To reach a novice-mid (NM) level on the ACTFL oral & written scale.
Intermedio – Español 1-2:
To reach a novice-high (NH) level on the ACTFL oral & written scale.
Avanzado – Español 3-4:
To reach an intermediate low (IL) level on the ACTFL oral & written
Avanzado – Español 3-4:
To reach an intermediate mid (IM) level on the ACTFL oral & written
Avanzado – Nativohablantes (Independent Studies):
To reach an intermediate high (IH) or a higher level on the ACTFL oral & written
Reglas:
All rules from the Student Handbook will be enforced (i.e. food & drink, gum (¡NO CHICLE!), tardies, excused/unexcused absences, academic integrity, etc…) Students need to be in the circle when the bell rings or they will be considered tardy. Students need to be familiar with ‘your school’s’ expectations and consequences and are expected to be courteous and respectful at all times. This means, as community members, students respect others’ vulnerability with acceptance and integrity. Ownership of one’s choices of behavior is also included within this integrity. Last of all, and seriously, NO HAVING ANY FUN (+ no sarcasm either!)
Academic Integrity:
ACCESS Academy’s policies apply. In the case of cheating or plagiarism, the students’ parents and the administration will be notified. A zero will be given for that particular assignment and the Principal may assign proper consequence. Translating programs should never be used for graded assignments.
A computer failure is not a valid excuse for late work. Be prepared to come to school early and complete assignments in MaestroSalmón’s classroom in case of a computer failure at home.

Students are responsible for checking their email, Maestro’s site (www.salmonlandia.weebly.com) and Synergy accounts regularly. Important information regarding assignments and grades will be communicated through [email protected].
Grading:
85% of the overall semester grade will be based on assignments, tests, and language usage throughout quarters 1 & 2 and 3 & 4 cumulatively. *Each level class will decide how the 85% will be dispersed between La Práctica and Los Proyectos. The Final Exam at the end of each semester will account for the remaining 15% of the overall grade. Grades will be posted on ‘your school site’ approximately every three weeks.
Homework Policy:
Students are typically assigned homework two to three times a week. The majority of the homework will be completed in the journal, and these assignments will be spot-checked in class. The journal organization will be checked least twice a term. Assignments will be posted in the classroom in the Table of Contents, in the journal’s table of contents, as well as on my webpage. Students with excused absences will have one day for every day absent to make up missed work. It is expected that students check with classmates and www.salmonlandia.weebly.com to find out what assignments they missed.
Tests & Quizzes: Make-ups & Retakes:
If a student misses a test/quiz due to an excused absence, they are expected to take the missed test/ quiz the day they return. If they have an extended absence due to illness, or traveling it is the student’s responsibility to arrange a time to retake the test, and to check with me at least one week in advance before prearranged absences. Students will be allowed two quiz retakes per term. Students may come in before or after school within a week of getting the quiz back graded. The higher grade will be kept.

- La Práctica* represents practicing in the language, whether it’s contributing as an active community member in class, maintaining vocabulary lists/stories weekly, or completing homework before coming to class.
